Doug Polk Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth predicted "fake news" Doug Polk would call him out for going back on his original world to skip the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. It turns ou, he was right.

Polk released a YouTube video on Friday in which he bashed the Poker Hall of Famer for deleting a fan poll. Hellmuth said in February that he wouldn't play this year's Main Event, a tournament he won in 1989, due to the grueling structure not being conducive to older poker players.

The 60-year-old former world champion then announced earlier this week that he'd leave the decision up to his X followers. He claimed that if more fans voted for him to play, he would. If they didn't, he wouldn't. But then things changed again.

Is Polk's Criticism of Poker Legend Justified?

Hellmuth's poll initially went in the direction of the fans wanting him to play the Main Event. At the time PokerNewsinitially reported on the story, nearly 75% of the voters chose the "yes" option. But then the poll went in the opposite direction.

With nearly 12,000 votes cast, approximately 54% had voted "no," meaning Hellmuth, if he were to stick to his word, would not be playing poker's most prestigious event this summer for the first time since the late 1980s. Hellmuth then deleted his poll, but Polk kept a screenshot of the results.

Polk ripped the 17-time bracelet winner for failing to stick to his word, and for using his platform for a "publicity stunt." Hellmuth, however, has said he hoped his boycott would encourage changes being made to the Main Event structure. Either way, Polk had some choice words for the BetRivers Casino ambassador.

"Say what you want about Phil Hellmuth, but at least he is a man of the people. Leaving this to a public vote on what he should do. There was just one little problem — the people," Polk said before showing the deleted poll results.

Polk also took aim at Hellmuth for sharing on X a screenshot of the early polling results before deleting the poll when the results went the other way.

Hellmuth, whether the poker community wants it or not, will play the 2025 WSOP Main Event, which begins July 2 at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. Polk also announced in his video that he'd be taking on a new online poker challenge on ClubWPT Gold, the sweeps coin poker site he promotes.

The co-owner of The Lodge Card Club near Austin, Texas recently completed a month-long bankroll challenge on ClubWPT Gold in which he attempted to win $100,000 in a month, but fell well short of that goal. This time around, his goal is to become the top ranked player on the entire platform between June 28 and July 1.
