The Simpsonsis widely regarded as one of the most successful and beloved television shows of all time. But actress and high-stakes poker player Jennifer Tilly, who was married to Simpsonsco-creator Sam Simon, tried to stop her ex-husband from making the iconic show.
Tilly, the star of the Chuckyfranchise and a recent guest on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, revealed her skepticism about Simon pursuing the cartoon in a new episode of the PokerNews Life Outside Pokerpodcast.
"I remember us trying to keep Sam from doing it because he had been offered his own deal, multi-million-dollar deal, at Hollywood Pictures, which was at the time very trendy," Tilly told PokerNews. "And I said, 'Sam, don't you want to be your own person and do your own shows?'"
Why 'The Simpsons' Creator Gave Poker Player Jennifer Tilly a 'Piece' of Iconic Show
Tilly and Simon were married from 1984 to 1991, which overlapped with the creation of The Simpsonsin the late 1980s. Tilly said she was worried her husband's contributions to the show he made with co-creators Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, his mentor, would be overlooked.
"For a long time, Sam's accomplishments in The Simpsonswere buried," said Tilly, who still gets a piece of the iconic show. "He brought in all the writers, fleshed out all the characters, and he didn't get any credit."
"So yes, it's true, I did try to keep him from doing The Simpsons. I'm very glad that I didn't. But Sam's a genius and he created something that people are going to be watching, I believe, 50 years from now. So it was a great contribution. People love The Simpsons."
Simon, a poker player with $362,900 in The Hendon Mobearnings, passed from colorectal cancer in 2015. He and Tilly remained close in the years after their divorce.
Not only did Tilly try to stop The Simpsonsfrom being made, but she also narrowly missed out on voicing a main character on the most popular cartoon of all time.
"Little-known factoid: I came very close to playing the mom (Marge Simpson) on that show," Tilly said, noting that Julie Kavner, the voice of Marge, didn't want to relocate from New York to Los Angeles for filming. "Sam had an idea that everybody should be recording at the same time, like a radio play."
At that point, Simon offered Tilly the part. "Sam gave me the script and he said, 'Jennifer, you could do Marge ... So all weekend long I'm like 'Homer' walking around like 'That's not nice, Bart.'"
Sadly for Tilly, the creators "finally made a special deal with (Kavner) that they made with nobody else that she could record wherever she wants. She did not have to be in LA."
"Ah, I would be so rich, too. Those people are getting like a million dollars an episode. And that's for years and years and years."
Tilly missed out on another main part on a major cartoon. She auditioned for Lois Griffin on Family Guybut ended up getting the smaller role of Bonnie Swanson.
"I wish I got Lois. The regular cast members make so much money. Last I heard, and this was about ten years ago, they were making $500,000 an episode. And when you're the guest, you basically make scale. And I've been the guest now for like, years."
"So I had two very, very close calls doing the matriarchs of these very lucrative series. But I'm very happy to be a part of Family Guy."
