Phil Hellmuth said months ago he would boycott the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. Many poker fans on social media, upon seeing video of his grand entrance on Thursday, are probably wishing he'd stuck to his original plan. Others enjoyed the act, however.
The "Poker Brat" traditionally arrives fashionably late for the $10,000 buy-in World Championship event he won in 1989. He showed up about five hours after play began on Day 1b, dressed like a 1980s hair band rockstar, full glam metal hairstyle and all.
Hellmuth's had some memorable Main Event entrances over the years — some have been hits, others criticized as "cringeworthy" by the poker community. The latter appears to be accurate for the 2025 edition based on early reactions.
Hellmuth, flanked by models, his son Phillip Hellmuth III, and Dan "Jungleman" Cates, on guitars, put on a "Highway to Hellmuth" production through the Horseshoe hallways and then into the Events Center to his Main Event seat at the feature table.
The 17-time bracelet winner rocked out to AC/DC's iconic 1979 rock song, "Highway to Hell," the staple song from its namesake album. Hellmuth played the role of lead singer, but it doesn't appear that David "ODB" Baker thought he resembled the late Bon Scott all too well.

Baker tweeted that Hellmuth "finds a way to be worse every year" with his Main Event entrances. He called the production "awful" and "cringe," a sentiment echoed by many others on poker X.
One X user referred to the entrance as "embarrassing as usual," but did give the Poker Hall of Famer credit for "committing to the bit." Another commenter called it "incredibly stupid and narcissistic." But, love it or hate it, the "Poker Brat's" entrances bring more eyeballs to the WSOP Main Event each year.
Hellmuth originally planned to boycott the tournament due to its grueling structure. The 60-year-old changed his mind in May when he announced he'd play an event he hasn't missed since the late 1980s. The Main Event without Phil Hellmuth, whether you enjoy his grand entrance bits or not, would be like having a 4th of July without fireworks.
